In an abrupt and unexpected move, Egypt's Prime Minister announced on Monday that he and the entire interim cabinet will resign from office early.

Originally, Prime MInister Hazem al-Beblawy were slated to remain in office until the new presidential election.

"It is time we all sacrificed for the good of the country," he said in a televised speech. "Rather than asking what has Egypt given us, we should instead be asking what we have done for Egypt."

He also said that he and the interim government had "made every effort to get Egypt out of the narrow tunnel in terms of security, economic pressures and political confusion".

Beblawy's successor was not immediately announced.
