An American student was found dead in a railroad tunnel in Central Rome on Friday. Italian officials said they discovered the body after it had been hit by a train.

The victim, John Durkin, was identified by his parents on Saturday morning. Durkin was a junior at Bates College in Maine who was studying abroad in Rome for the semester through a program at Trinity College.

On Wednesday night, Durkin went to a bar with a group of friends, but he left the bar alone, according to CNN. The student was reported missing when he did not return home the next morning.

Durkin had been in Italy for a little over a month for the program, said Tom Durkin, a family spokesman.

John Durkin was studying economics at Bates College, and was also a linebacker for his college's football team.
