Every other week, Staff Reporter Jillian Morabito showcases some of the tunes you should be tuning in to. Here are her picks for your new Must Listen Playlist:

“Summer’s End” by m.a.k.u.

Since it’s not exactly what most would call a traditional winter in Southern California this January, why not head to the beach? But before you do, be sure to listen to this song by the Los Angeles-based musician m.a.k.u. “Summer’s End” is a track written about the thrill (and inevitable conclusion) of a summer romance. With an acoustic backing and vocals nothing short of Joshua Radin, m.a.k.u. is an artist to keep on your radar. Besides acoustic tracks, m.a.k.u. also writes hip-hop, rock, and classical music

“Reflections” by MisterWives

This iTunes free single of the week is completely worth downloading. This single, by the New York band MisterWives, is electric and catchy to say the least. With vocals similar to Regina Spector and an alternative-pop vibe like Walk the Moon or St. Lucia, "Reflections" is brings together all that we love about an "indie" pop song. Though the band has only been together since last February, they have the talent and tunes to make it big.

“Somebody Loves You” by Betty Who

Who doesn’t love an upbeat pop song that hasn’t been destroyed by mainstream radio (yet)? “Somebody Loves You” is a shinning example of this. Betty Who may look like P!nk, but the Australian sounds like a modern Madonna (even if the music video and synth backing is channeling the 80s). So grab your leg warmers and get on your elliptical, because this is certainly a song to add to the workout regime.

“White Lies” by Max Frost

Another great track that has gained recognition via national commercials, “White Lies” is a fun electro-alternative jam with R&B influences. Because NPR pretends to know all, they named Max Frost one of the top artists you should have known last year. Well, you can make it up by getting to know him in 2014. If you like Dan Croll and Calvin Harris, you’ll enjoy Frost as well.

“For Emma” by Bon Iver

Because it’s January, there is not a more appropriate time to listen to Bon Iver (perhaps it’s because of the association with forests and cabins). This track is particularly applicable because it is about winter and always “running” to try and find a real home. Though it seems like yesterday, the LP “For Emma, Forever Ago” was literally released forever ago (2007) and makes for a fitting throwback.
