The City of Los Angeles will host the 2016 U.S. Olympic Team marathon trials, announced Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti in a press conference on Wednesday.

The trials will be held on Feb. 13, 2016 and will include both men’s and women’s races.

“With its iconic landmarks and decades of experience hosting world class sporting events, Los Angeles is the ideal location for America’s elite marathoners to prepare for the 2016 Olympics Games in Brazil,” said Garcetti.

Cincinnati and Houston had also placed bids for the 2016 Olympic Trials with USA Track & Field.

Los Angeles has a rich history with the Olympic Games, and these marathon trials will add to the tradition. Joan Benoit Samuelson won L.A.’s first women’s Olympic marathon in 1984.

“As the host of the 1932 and 1984 Olympic Games, Los Angeles has a tremendous Olympic legacy and L.A.’s status as a global center of sport and culture make it an exceptional host for the Olympic Trials,” said U.S. Olympic Committee CEO Scott Blackmun.

The annual Los Angeles Marathon will also be hosted a day after the trials, allowing participation from a wider range of athletes.

“By securing the Olympic Trials, Los Angeles is now set to deliver this city’s biggest running weekend since that iconic victory, providing our L.A. Marathon participants and fans with a rare opportunity to be part of an Olympic Trials celebration,” said Tracy Russell, CEO of L.A. MARATHON LLC.

Qualifiers from these trials will represent the United States in Rio de Janeiro at the 2016 Olympic Games.
