It's that time of year again: Super Bowl Sunday!

One of the biggest gigs for singers is to perform the national anthem in the MetLife stadium in New Jersey on this special day in sports, and this year the one taking the cake is Renée Fleming.

Some (or many) may ask, who is Renée Fleming? Renée Fleming is a soprano opera singer, and she will be accompanied by a recording of the New Jersey Symphony when she sings "The Star-Spangled Banner." The singer is expected to start performances of Dvorak's "Rusalka" at the Metropolitan Opera in New York this week.

The first opera singer to perform the national anthem at a Super Bowl game, Fleming joins the ranks of pop singers such as Alicia Keys and Christina Aguilera.

It seems a bit random that an opera singer would sing for the Super Bowl, given that a majority of viewers are unaware of the operatic world, and are not familiar with her as a singer. While it will be a new experience for the major sports event, it will definitely bring some light to the more traditional world of opera instead of focusing on the well known pop stars. Since Fleming is a professional opera singer, the sound of the national anthem will have a much more classical appeal to it.

As Fleming performs just minutes before the big kickoff, she'll be joined by a 32-voice group from military choruses according to the LA Times. Fleming will sing an arrangement by Rob Mathes.

This year's Super Bowl won't be the first time the soprano has sung the national anthem at a major sporting event. In 2003 she sang the opening song for the World Series where she messed up the lyrics for part of the performance. Let's hope she doesn't pull a Christina Aguilera for this year!

Super Bowl XLVIII will aired on Fox with the kickoff time scheduled for 3:30 P.M. PST.
