In 1943, the first "Press Week" was held in New York City. Created by publicist Eleanor Lambert as a distraction from the attention the French were receiving during World War II, what would become the famous New York Fashion Week enabled Americans to experience fashion on their own turf. Though it made its debut in the early 1940's, New York Fashion Week retains its spot on the pedestal of American fashion. Here, we count down the best looks in the history of New York Fashion Week.

Badgley Mischka Spring 2013

Badgley Mischka's Spring 2013 runway was a sea of pastels. Silver embellishments, dusty rose layers, and muted lavender were key features of the spring line. This piece features a chest knot placed above a panel of sheer, lavender lace, leading into a silver embellished waist. The look is timeless yet highly unique.

Michael Kors Fall 2005

There are not enough positive things to say about this Kors sweater. The color is light and universally flattering. The high collar and basic shade draw attention to intense eye makeup. The embellished chest keeps the piece as a whole from being bland. Kors is the master of creating sweaters that those who refuse to purchase anything "ugly" (even for novelty) will wear to holiday gatherings.

Ralph Lauren Fall 2002

This Ralph Lauren FW02 gown looks like the lovechild of Vampira's Grammy gown and a beachy maxi. Though the fabric is, of course, perfection, the neckline is what really makes the piece. Forever-knot embroidery at the chest opens into a front keyhole. The gown becomes increasingly elaborate at the back.

Luella Bartley Fall 2007

This piece from Luella Bartley's Fall 2007 line reminds us of Minnie Mouse: if Minnie Mouse were really, really hot. Though oversized polka dots, sheer netting, and a bow-tied waist may sound juvenile, a jet black tone and simple, seductive makeup bring the look into adult territory.

Alexander Wang Fall 2008

Wait, is this something on the runway that we can actually WEAR? Alexander Wang is the king of functionality, known for a label that consists predominantly of knitwear. His tendency to create pieces in neutral hues and basic shapes has made him the favorite of celebrities and fashionistas alike. This outfit works just as easily on the runway as it would on a graduate student.

Anna Sui F/W 2006

Good fashion is predictive, and this Anna Sui look is just that. Though the oversized peter pan collar was unique in 2006, in 2014, these collars can be found in Jcrew, Topshop and department stores. The F/W06 line proves that Anna Sui's designs are a crystal ball of looking awesome.

Ralph Lauren Spring 2005

Ralph Lauren might be the best brand of all time. Their Spring 2005 runway might be their best runway of all time. This dress might be the best dress of the SS05 runway.

Though champagne silk is usually reserved for marriage or lingerie, a deep halter neckline and embellished waist keeps the piece from wandering too far into either territory. Paired with an updo and chandelier earrings of a similar hue, this dress is everything that a fashionable woman wants.
