Amanda Knox and ex-boyfriend Raffaele Sollecito were found guilty of murder by an Italian appeals court on Thursday.

Knox, living in the United States, was not present in court to hear the verdict sentencing her to 28 1/2 years. Sollecito, however, appeared in court and was sentenced to 25 years for his connection to the 2007 murder of British exchange student Meredith Kercher. The initial conviction of murder for the pair in 2009 was overturned in 2011. But in March, the Italian Supreme Court overturned the acquittals because they felt the jury “did not consider all the evidence.”

Knox, who already spent four years in custody, is expected to appeal the verdict once again. Often times called “double jeopardy,” U.S. law says “a person cannot be tried twice on the same charge,” making it unclear whether Knox will have to carry out her sentence.
