Macklemore and Ryan Lewis were big winners at the 2014 Grammys (Twitter/@mackbrazil).
It’s true! The “Same Love” artists were the first to get one of the biggest Grammy awards of the night.

Many predicted it and even more are ecstatic to find out the two-man group received official notoriety for their fun-loving and uplifting work this past year.

Let’s take a look at five of our ultimate reasons why we agree they deserved the award.

5. They popped their own tags.

The duo’s #1 single "Thrift Shop" reached the top of the charts without being signed to a record label. Yep, you read correctly. ‘Lemore and Lewis did this all on their own, unlike many major artists that have stolen the spotlight with a catchy single like this one. Major respect to this powerful pair.

4. The man has style.

Whether he's spotted live in concert, featuring fluffy fur in his stylish music videos, or rocking his classy poses on the red carpet, the “Same Love” vocalist puts "thrift shop" fashion on a high-end level.

3. They captured their fans through their music... and nothing else.

The team's hit album "The Heist" reached the #1 spot on the iTunes chart in just hours. The top album spot was held for four straight days. Again, the producer/vocalist duo released their album independently. It was an unimaginable goal that even they couldn’t predict.

"We wouldn’t end up with a big advertising budget or have the capital to take over full blog sites with our banners… Yet in our minds, maintaining our independence and thus creative control was far more important in the end," said Macklemore on his website when celebrating his one-year anniversary of the album release.

2. They set trends.

Clearly, Macklemore has set a trend with his top-heavy cut. Arguably, for both men and women on the red carpet! Examples?

How about the biebs who rocks the due like he discovered it. Although it suits him well in his infamous DUI mugshot.

Rockstar Miley Cyrus surprised the world when she came out with her blond short locks that also closely resembles Macklemore’s signature 'do.

1. They’re changing the world with love.

Although they lost Song of the Year to “Royals” by another new artist, Lorde, the “Same Love” single is our number one reason why the Hip Hop pair deserve such a prestigious honor.

The inspiring single reached a large amount of popularity, making headlines and reaching over 106 million views on YouTube. This is a song written by vocalist Macklemore in hopes of bringing attention to LGBTQ discrimination. The numbers prove their message has been heard and continues to make a difference.
