Grammys 2014: A Letter To Katy Perry Regarding Her Gown Choice
You released my anthem for being a girl in California. What's better than that? Absolutely nothing. But right now, I'm a little disappointed in you.
I'm not sure if you thought you needed more practice for the song you performed so you had a dress made with the notes on it so you could practice your harmonies on the red carpet. Or, if you thought music notes on a dress actually looked good. Whatever the reason, it is doesn't make it okay to wear music notes on a dress. Ever. Many critics raved that you showed up in a gown that was on the Paris runway just days earlier, but just because it is Valentino couture does not make it okay to wear.
I will begin with the top half of the dress. What was coming out of your shoulders? Are you going back to your "Teenage Dream" album days and pretend they are fireworks? I'm sorry but I hope they explode off the dress soon. Thicker strips of tulle built on top of each other shaped as an X on the front half of the dress made it seem like X marked the spot and the hidden treasure was your breasts. Sheer long sleeves and a sheer chest? As much as I love sheer fabric and how sexy it can be, there's a limit on how much you can use in one dress. I'm just not quite sure what is even going on there.
Should I dare move to the bottom and even try to figure out what was happening? I am more curious to know what song those musical notes were sounding out rather than the actual dress itself. The front might be okay if the music notes were gone and it was just white material, but I let the front fool me at first. You posed to the side and it got even worse. There was a train of musical notes on the back. Katy Perry, what happened in one year? The year before you were in a beautiful mint green Gucci gown, which was a step up from the previous years of blue hair and god knows what outfits. The Gucci dress was simple yet elegant and this year's dress is the exact opposite.
Katy, you are an amazing and inspirational woman in the music industry but this Grammys 2014 choice did not impress. Your makeup looked flawless and natural and ultimately saved you in the end. Also, I have to ask, where can I find your nail color?
Even though your pick for this years awards show was not at the top of my list, I will still be starting off my Friday nights with "T.G.I.F." I'm still a fan, but the next time you step out in public in a nice gown, can you go back to the basics and think simple is sometimes just better?
Sincerely,
A Fan Who Isn't Singing Any Praise For Your Dress
