As the music industry changes over the course of time, genres begin to overlap with one another, making categories of the awards show rather confusing--what is the difference between "Best Song" and "Best Performance?" And then of course there are all of the individual awards for each separate genre. The Grammys can simultaneously be specific and vague.
Some have also argued that the Grammys is just a glorified performance of various artists, due to the large number of performers spread throughout the evening.
While one can find a number of faults with the Grammy Awards, they are still recognizing the best of the best in the music industry. The Grammy Awards still hold its relevance in that aspect.

As for the performances, what's an award show for the music industry without a plethora of musical performances? While the Grammys might not be as highly anticipated as the Academy Awards, they are still equally important. Many also watch the Grammys for the performances. Artists in their respective industries work hard to reach the points they're at in their lives, and those who turn out to be excellent should be recognized for their achievements.
There are plenty of music-related awards shows, which can make it difficult to keep track of, but the prestige of winning a Grammy parallels that of an Academy Award. Winning a Grammy is a highlight of any artist's career.
