With the 56th annual Grammy Awards approaching, it is only fitting that we glance back at some of the best and worst beauty looks in Grammy history. When it comes to the Grammys, Hollywood’s biggest stars will stop at nothing to look their best, picking the most fashion-forward stylist to ensure a spot on the next morning’s best dressed list. With all of this focus on their outfit, some celebrities don’t realize that their makeup and hair can make (and often times break) their ensemble. Here, we list the most memorable beauty moments of the red carpet.

WORST

2002: Alicia Keys

Though 2002 was a fantastic year for Alicia Keys' career, the same does not apply for her makeup. Keys delivered a whole lot of cultural appropriation with her Sari-inspired head scarf and rhinestoned eye makeup. Although Keys came home with 5 Grammys, including Song of the Year for “Fallin”, we just wish that she would have let her talent do the talking.

2001: Christina Aguilera

Aguilera has rocked her fair share of looks over the years, but this 2001 Grammys get up is one we remember for all of the wrong reasons. The long, stringy corn rows and matching pink eyeshadow do nothing to complement her (already revealing) dress. Luckily, Aguilera has since refined her red carpet ensembles, and looks better than ever.

Lady Gaga (Pinterest @Lori Lee-Weber)

2010: Lady Gaga

Is there ever a line that Gaga won't cross? Probably not, but this futuristic piece fails to leave us wanting more. Gaga is known for her outlandish (and often times bizarre) looks, but just once it might be refreshing to see Gaga stripped down and more natural on the red carpet. Another haute-couture design would worthy of more yawns than applause.

Bonnie Mckee (Pinterest @Martin)

2013: Bonnie Mckee

One of the worst on this list, Bonnie Mckee came to the red carpet donning hair with two distinct colors. The overly-penciled eyebrows and matching orange shadow fails to complement Mckee’s blue eyes, and makes her usually youthful appearance seem harsh and overdone.

2013: Kerli

This might just be the worst Grammy look of all time. Kerli looked more like she was going to a rave than to the Grammys. We can’t help but resent every part of this makeup look, pink eyebrows included.

BEST

Kelly Osbourne (Pinterest @Kim Williams)

2012: Kelly Osbourne

There’s a fine line that is all too easily crossed with colored hair. Osbourne treads right along that line while still looking gorgeous. Her purple hue frames her face beautifully, making us wish we could rock the same breed of grandma-chic. Rock on, Kell!

Rihanna (Pinterest @Lupita Marfil)

2013: Rihanna

Not many can pull off a red lipstick/red gown combo, but Rihanna’s natural beauty and loose waves make for Grammy perfection. We’re envious of Rih Rih’s brows and her smile that wears the makeup, not the other way around.

Gwen Stefani (Pinterest @Karri Arreola)

1998: Gwen Stefani

Stefant embodied the quintessential late 90's with her thinly-plucked eyebrows and top knots in this vintage Grammys throwback. Always the trendsetter, Stefani exuded sass and paved the way for a hairstyle that saw a comeback this year on none other than twerk queen, Miley Cyrus.

2013: Beyonce

We might as well call her the queen of the world, because Beyonce never fails to leave us in awe of her effortless glow. In this 2013 Grammys look, Beyonce went for a more a natural eye to complement a pop of red on her lips. The focus on her easy, breezy confidence was emphasized with a sleek, low ponytail.

Taylor Swift (Pinterest @Megan Christensen)

2010: Taylor Swift

In 2010, Swift not only walked away with a Grammy for Album of the Year, but also one of the most stunning beauty looks in Grammy history. Prior to 2010, T. Swift was keen on rocking her signature tight curls. When she walked the red carpet with an updo, she grew up in the eyes of her fans.

Lea Michele (Pinterest @Romona Keveza)

2010: Lea Michele

Michele exudes radiance from top to bottom with this 2010 Grammys beauty look. The straight black hair and side swept bangs drew attention to her naturally gleaming smile, without overshadowing the voluminous skirt. Lea Michele always impresses on the red carpet, and we look forward to her ever-evolving style.
