On Friday, an Al Qaeda-backed group seized control of the western city of Fallujah, Iraq, following a bloody three-day battle, according to the Washington Post.

Upon reclaiming the city that had previously been secured by United States troops, the militant group, the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL), once again declared Fallujah an Islamic state.

Over a hundred people perished in the fighting in Fallujah and Ramadi on Friday, according to Aljazeera.

"The whole of Fallujah is taken," Qasim Abed, a member of the provincial council in the region and the former governor of Anbar told USA Today. "The situation is very bad."

Analysts appear to doubt that the rebels will be able to maintain control over the land they have seized, but the deaths and drop in morale among captured areas remain serious causes for concern.

Meanwhile, Nouri al-Maliki, the Iraqi prime minister has vowed to rid the Anbar province of all terrorist groups. On a state television program, Maliki promised that he would "not back down until we end all terrorist groups and save our people in Anbar."
