Texas executed Mexican Edgar Tamayo on Wednesday despite outcry and warnings that his death could damage relations between U.S. and Mexico. The last-ditch appeal to the U.S. Supreme Court by his lawyers was unsuccessful. Texas officials put Tamayo to death by lethal injection at the state penitentiary in Huntsville, near Houston.

Mexico's government issued a statement on Sunday expressing strong opposition to the execution and saying the foreign ministry had "made use of all available political, legal and administrative means" to prevent it. The treatment of Mexican prisoners on death row in the U.S. has been a long-standing issue in the region.
