If you receive a “mysterious” snapchat from a friend, do not be alarmed. They may have been hacked.

Data from 4.6 million Snapchat users has been stolen and published

SnapchatDB.com has taken security information such as usernames and passwords and made this public. It is part of their effort to prove the social media company must raise its security and privacy settings.

The website says: “Our motivation behind the release was to raise the public awareness around the issue, and also put public pressure on Snapchat to get this exploit fixed. It is understandable that tech startups have limited resources but security and privacy should not be a secondary goal. Security matters as much as user experience does.”

The site censored at least a part of users’ phone numbers, but are considering releasing even more information later on.

The information was released under a protected name and mailing address in Panama.

For now, the site has been taken down but people were still able to access information for over a day.

Snapchat was previously warned about the potential threat of a hack but responded by saying that they had taken enough precautionary measures to assure it wouldn’t happen.

There are over 30 million active Snapchat users.

Look up your Snapchat name here to see if you have been affected.
