U.S. Scholars Endorse Academic Boycott Of Israel
Approximately 66 percent of ASA's 1,252 who participated voted yes, 30% voted no and 3% abstained.
The endorsement applies to the ASA as an organization but is not binding on its members. It also targets institutions in Israel and not individuals.
"We believe that the ASA’s endorsement of a boycott is warranted given U.S. military and other support for Israel; Israel’s violation of international law and UN resolutions; the documented impact of the Israeli occupation on Palestinian scholars and students; the extent to which Israeli institutions of higher education are a party to state policies that violate human rights; and the support of such a resolution by many members of the ASA," says an ASA statement released Monday.
ASA is the second educational group in the U.S. to adopt the boycott. The Association for Asian American Studies did so in April.
