In early 2015, Tesla Motors plans on releasing an electric car valued at about $40,000. This is a drastic change from the price of current cars by the company, the least expensive starting at about $70,000.

The affordable option, however, wouldn’t be on the market until 2016 or 2017, the maker announced

“This is ultimately the car that will make Tesla a household brand rather than just something in the premium segments. No car company can live off 20,000 to 30,000 sales a year and be profitable in the long term,” said car specialist Thilo Koslowski.

Currently, Tesla only offers two options for their cars, Model S and Model X.

“The strategy of Tesla is to enter at the high end of the market, where customers are prepared to pay a premium then drive down market as fast as possible to higher unit volume and lower prices with each successive model,” said Chief Executive Elon Musk.
