An airport avionics technician from Kansas was arrested Friday for planning to drive a car full of explosives into a terminal at Wichita’s Mid Continent Regional Airport.

Terry Lee Loewen,58, had been under investigation for about six months, after he made statements online about wanting to commit “violent jihad” against the U.S. Law enforcement said he was trying to support Al-Qaeda.

Authorities said Loewen spent months studying the airport’s layout and flight patterns to create the greatest amount of damage possible. He also planned to kill himself in the explosion to become a martyr.

Before his terrorism attempt, Loewen also unknowingly spoke to an undercover FBI employee about downloading an “Al-Qaeda Manual” online.
