Eighteen current and former Los Angeles County sheriff's deputies have been indicted on an array of charges after a sweeping investigation into inmate abuse and corruption, federal prosecutors announced Monday.

The grand jury indictments and criminal complaints allege unjustified beatings of jail inmates and visitors at L.A. jail facilities, unjustified detentions and obstruction of justice.

“Our investigation also found that these incidents did not take place in a vacuum — in fact, they demonstrated behavior that had become institutionalized," the U.S. attorney in Los Angeles, Andre Birotte Jr., said in a statement.

The defendants are expected to be arraigned Monday afternoon in U.S. District Court in Los Angeles.
