We all love them: the bold, other-worldly, supernatural characters that take over the shows they are a part of. They outshine the other characters in the show, creating a huge fan base of loyal followers, whose sole focus every night that show airs is about what will happen to their favorite character. It is hard to be such a major character in a showwhere everyone focuses on you, but these stars manage to pull it off. Here is a list of the top five best supernatural characters on TV, past and present:

1) Sarah Michele Gellar as Buffy in "Buffy the Vampire Slayer":

Not only does Buffy have just the right amount of spunk with lines like “Right. I’m the chosen one. And I choose to be shopping,” but she is the quintessential female warrior with just the right amount of style. Beyond saving the world (on multiple occasions) through self-sacrifice, blood, sweat, and tears, she is always a loyal friend, companion, and partner. Let’s face it - she is the ultimate person to have by your side in a zombie apocalypse.

2) James Marsters as Spike in "Buffy the Vampire Slayer":

Few people can wear Kate Beckinsale’s "Underworld" leather jacket better than Kate Beckinsale does…but as the first vampire to don the iconic jacket while being a bad*ss, Spike manages to take the lead in "who wore it better." Playing a part in the epic struggle for Buffy between choosing him or Angel as her lover, he was a part of one of the first "Team (Supernatural Character)” competitions. But let’s be honest. We were all cheering when Buffy and Spike tore apart that abandoned house in season six when they first got together. As a character with one of the best character arcs of all time, starting off as a soulless bloodsucking fiend, to a genuine guy who ends up sacrificing himself for the good of Sunnydale in the series finale, Spike takes the cake for the best vampire character seen in a television show…ever.

3) Jessica Lange as Fiona Goode in "American Horror Story: Coven":

Having played various roles throughout the "American Horror Story" series, Fiona Goode’s character is one of Lange’s best. Not only is Fiona the Supreme Witch in the show, but she has so much determination and power, mixed with just the right amount of ruthlessness. We were all shocked when she started killing off other witches in the show, even letting one of her past classmates, Myrtle Snow, burn at the stake after Fiona frames her for murder in order to save herself. Beyond her brilliant use of magic, Fiona has some of the best political views, telling the character of Madame Delphine LaLaurie, after LaLaurie has slammed the character Queenie with racial slurs, that she will become Queenie’s slave, saying “there’s nothing I hate more than a racist.” Fiona is the biggest, baddest witch of all time, taking the spotlight in this season of "American Horror Story."

4) Patricia Arquette as Alison Dubois in "Medium":

Few characters can be psychic without seeming cheesy or overdramatic, but Alison Dubois is the perfect combination of a psychic andnormal person. She has learned to balance her life as a psychic through helping the Phoenix District Attorney solve murder cases by using her psychic abilities, and her personal life as normal mother, Alison Dubois. The best part of this character is she does not use her abilities for fame or fortune; she uses her abilities to help people and bring justice to the Phoenix area. She also shows so much compassion for the dead people that she helps, and she goes to the extremes to do what she knows is right. Her personal relationships with people, specifically her husband, Joe, whose death in the final season broke all of our hearts, show just how genuine her character is, making her one of the best psychics in television history.

5) Sam Huntington as Josh Levison in "Being Human":

Josh Levison is the perfect example of a normal guy trying to deal with being a supernatural creature in the real world. Being a werewolf could never be easy, but Josh portrays the real-world implications of having such a curse in today’s society while living in an urban environment that few characters ever address in other television shows. Understanding that turning into a werewolf could mean the death of innocents, Josh rents out a storage unit in which he locks himself away for the full moon, where he hides his deepest darkest secret from those he loves, as well as the oblivious world around him. His character is also hilarious, witty, and compassionate, truly making him a great furry friend to have around…when he’s not actually furry, of course, because that would be dangerous.
