The search for a southern California family that has been missing for over three years ended in tragedy today, when authorities confirmed the identity of two sets of remains found Monday in the California desert, near Victorville.

According to CNN, the remains were identified as those of Summer and Joseph McStay, missing since February of 2010 along with their two sons.

Two additional sets of remains police found nearby are believed to be those of the McStay children.

How and why the McStay family disappeared remains a mystery. Surveillance footage taken on February 8, 2010 shows a family of the McStay's description walking into Mexico, but investigators have no further leads.
