Obama Extends Deadline To Cancel Insurance Plans
"Insurers can extend current plans that otherwise would have been canceled into 2014, and Americans can choose to re-enroll in the same kind of plan," he said.
Critics point out that this comes after the president's continued promise during his 2012 re-election campaign: "If you like your plan, you can keep your plan" -- period.
Extending existing insurance policies for only one year, however, was not a part of that campaign.
In response to criticism of his credibility and the recent dip in his approval ratings, the president said he understood Americans' concerns. "I think it's legitimate for [Americans] to expect me to have to win back some of their trust. I get how upsetting this can be for Americans, particularly after the assurances they got from me."
The extension of current health care plans comes with a caveat: Insurers must inform their customers about what protections their current plans don't include, and must indicate which new options may bring down the cost of their health insurance.
