French news source AFP reports that, due to poor harvests, there are one million citizens in Niger without food. The crops failed this year due to severe drought and flooding.

Niger is in need of about $112 million in order to sustain their people until the end of the year. International partners are expected to assist in these efforts.

80 percent of Niger is covered by the Sahara desert, which was hit by floods earlier this year. The floods killed 32 people and left 230,000 homeless.

Food shortages frequent the country and leave many children malnourished. According to the United Nations Children's Fund, though 300,000 malnourished children have been treated since 2010, 6,000 still die every year.
