Huge Typhoon Hits Philippines

Its destructive power exceeds existing scientific standards. On a scale of zero to eight, the severe weather event blasting into Southeast Asia's pacific islands ranks an 8.1.

The swirling mass of wind, dubbed super typhoon Haiyan, is one of the strongest storms ever recorded in human history. It made landfall on the evening of Nov. 7 and is set to move through the Philippines just south of Manilla in the next two days.

The aftermath remains to be charted, though experts have warned in their early estimates to expect "catastrophic damage" and "significant loss of life."

Evacuation and preparation efforts have gone into effect. Residents made haste to protect themselves beginning days ago, with thousands having fled the country in advance of the storm.
