Food Banks 'Panicking' As Food Stamp Cuts Kick In

Allocations to the Supplemental Nutritional Assistance Progrm (SNAP), instated as part of President Obama's 2009 stimulus package, are coming to an end, causing a $5 billion cut to food stamps which took effect Friday.

According to NBC News, 46.7 million needy Americans receiving food stamps through SNAP will suffer an anticipated loss of $36 a month, on average.

President of the Food Bank for New York City Margaret Purvis expects that benefit slashes will draw even more people to the organizations that already provide 400,000 meals a day to people around the city.

"Our members are panicking," she told NBC as today's cuts approached. "We're telling everyone to make sure you are prepared for longer lines."
