Americans Suffer After Cuts To Food Stamp Program
More than 50 million Americans who receive food stamps are getting less as a temporary increase in benefits that was part of the federal stimulus package expired on November 1.
The Supplemental Nutrition and Assistance program (SNAP), which provides the stamps, saw five billion in overall reductions. A family of four collecting $668 per month will now have their portion cut by $36.
And the House has voted to cut even more money from SNAP, reducing $39 billion from its funding over the next decade.
As one in seven Americans receives food stamps, a spokesman for Feeding America said the recent cut will be “close to catastrophic for many people,” this prediction does not even include the cuts proposed over the next ten years.
