Thanksgiving is just around the corner, and the day that you finally get to meet his parents is looming over your head. Like they say, first impressions count, and that means that what you wear will be scrutinized. There is nothing more nerve-wracking than a mother calculatively eyeing your cheetah-print pants.

Fret no more! Checking out these 5 tips will give you the best idea of what outfits to avoid. We'll help you stay trendy and stylish while looking family-appropriate whether you’re eating out at a fancy restaurant or having a homemade meal.

Leave the stilettos at home.

You'd be surprised at how many women think stilettos are an everyday occasion. However, if you must have your heel fix, a good option are ankle booties which are perfect for the fall season and for mom. They're not overbearing, are down to earth, and look good with any A-line skirt or skinny jeans.

Modesty or Nunnery?

While modesty is a virtue, there is such a thing as overdoing it. Showing some leg doesn't necessarily mean you deserve a scarlet letter. An option for that day can be a plain midi skirt, covering up your knees, and print blouse to insert a bit of your personality to the outfit. To finish it off, adding a simple necklace or a brown wide brimmed hat will add flair to this safe outfit.

Chunky jewelry is cute--as long as you don’t look like a gypsy.

Chunky necklaces, beady bracelets, and multiple rings on each finger are beautiful for the boho look during the summer or if you're heading down to Coachella, but not for when you're helping to slice traditional ham with mom and pops. Thinner, more dainty pieces of jewelry are more fitting for the occasion. However, anyone can get away with tear drop or vintage napier earrings which are on the thicker side.

Don’t let dad see more of you than he needs to see.

Leggings are not pants. I repeat, Leggings are not pants. They bunch up in all the wrong places, not to mention that everyone will know what kind of underwear you wear by the end of the day. While leggings are popular to wear, there are proper, cute ways to wear them. Try wearing a long blouse with a belt to cinch at the waist, leggings underneath, and your choice of footwear. Ankle booties, riding boots, flats, the options are endless.

And finally, be careful with perfume application. Moderation is key.

We all know what it's like to be struck by the aroma of overbearing perfume, so it's not advisable to return the favor. With more potent perfumes, dots on her wrists or neck is a generous amount. For body sprays that are more watered down, one full body spritz is just as effective. Added tip: Carry a travel sized body spray just for those bathroom break moments and you need to freshen up.
