Sources confirmed on Wednesday that “Scandal” star Kerry Washington was expecting her first child with her San Francisco 49ers husband, Nnamdi Asomugha. While this is happy news for the newlywed couple, fans of the ABC drama are speculating whether or not her pregnancy will be written into the script.

Washington admitted to E! that she has no clue what will happen on the show, but confessed that a pregnancy may not be impossible.

“I really never know where the show is going. That's the part I love about television, you just don't know what the beginning the middle and end is going to be, so really anything can happen. Olivia can die, she can get married, she can get pregnant - anything can really happen,” said Washington.

According to E! Online, executive producer, writer and television genius Shonda Rhimes is still contemplating how to address Washington’s pregnancy on the show.

One insider doubts that Olivia Pope will get pregnant and said, “It would slow Olivia and the show down.”

Real talk. Olivia Pope is workaholic. She lives for her career and her gladiators. We love watching her strut around the streets of Washington D.C. with a fierceness and ferocity that we can only hope to emulate. It would be supremely disappointing and unrealistic to see her take a step back to become a mom.

And while Olivia’s professional life may seem in order, her personal life is a mess. She’s having an affair with the married President of the United States, and a secret fling with a trained assassin. And her father, Eli Pope, doesn't exactly represent the sweet, old grandpa.

Of course, the million-dollar question is: If Olivia Pope did get pregnant, who would be the baby daddy?

Fitz would probably be the most obvious, and the most scandalous choice. The pair have sizzling chemistry, and are clearly powerless to stay apart. Their flawed relationship is the central focus of the show, but if the President knocked up Olivia Pope all hell would break loose. Fitz would never be able to father another woman’s child, especially if Cyrus and Mellie have their way. Olivia and Fitz came close to being publicly exposed earlier this season, but luckily dodged a major bullet. It seems unlikely that Rhimes will revisit that storyline so quickly. Nevertheless, a pregnancy scandal would provide the perfect opportunity for fans to witness Mellie’s head explode.

Then there is Jake Ballard. Olivia’s latest love interest on the show has a sultry stare that alone could get someone pregnant. The two are basically living together at this point, so an accidental pregnancy doesn’t seem too unbelievable. Jake is mysterious and attractive, and he seems to have genuine feelings for Olivia. At least the baby would have a somewhat stable home. As stable as it gets, when your mother’s a professional fixer, and your father just got released from a hole. Predictably, Fitz would be furious, and would probably be driven to commit murder…again. A Pope-Ballard baby would also create backlash from fans who are obsessed with the Olivia and Fitz dynamic.

Rhimes is no stranger to dealing with pregnant stars. On “Grey’s Anatomy,” Ellen Pompeo, Sarah Drew, Jessica Capshaw and Chyler Leigh all filmed while pregnant, and it wasn’t included on the show. Rhimes was able to work around their pregnancies, and the fans were none the wiser.

It is probable that Rhimes will take the same approach on “Scandal.” Washington’s pregnancy will likely be disguised as she films, and we can all continue adoring Olivia Pope sans baby.
