Remember the woman who gave that historic 11-hour filibuster against the anti-abortion bill SB-5 in Texas back in June? She's running for governor now. Texas state Sen. Wendy Davis (D-Fort Worth) announced her bid at an event in the Fort Worth suburb of Haltom City. In the event, she talked about education and her background as a single mother and promised a "better tomorrow for everyone." Some people believe that she can rally Democrats in what has been a traditionally Republican state. Pro-life groups have already been creating ads attacking Davis, which are set to begin airing this weekend.

A Texas Lyceum poll showed that Davis is trailing her opponent, Attorney General Greg Abbott, by 8 percent. “She’s just starting off, she’s a state senator representing a small Senate district in Fort Worth—so starting off, this [poll] is great news,” said Glenn Smith, director of Texas PAC and campaign manager of Democrat Ann Richards’s 1990 successful bid for governor. “I’m really optimistic about her—she’s got what it takes.”

Davis's filibuster was not her first venture into women's health. In 2012 she was on the "Women's Health Express" bus protesting a law that slashed Medicaid funds to abortion providers. In 2011 she wrote a bill that required law-enforcement agencies to account for a backlog of untested rape kits.

Davis made an effort to separate herself from Washington, further specifying on her background as a Texan, "If you want a governor who will speak for everyone, every Texan needs to be a part of that governor to get elected."
