AMC has announced that the first episode of "The Walking Dead" season four racked up 16.1 million viewers.

That is the highest rating for any episode of "The Walking Dead." Premiere ratings confirm the The Walking Dead is the #1 telecast among adults 18 to 49.

The combined adults 18 to 49 ratings for Sunday night’s episodes of "The Amazing Race," "Revenge," "The Good Wife," "Betrayal," and "The Mentalist" would still be lower than "The Walking Dead’s" rating, even including primetime NFL football. With time shifted playback, Sunday night’s premiere ratings should exceed 20 million viewers.

“We could not be more proud of this show and everyone on both sides of the camera who work so hard to give life to this story of character, leadership and survival,” said AMC President Charlie Collier.

The previous record for an episode of "The Walking Dead" was 12.4 million total viewers and 8.1 million adult viewers from 18 to 49 for the season three finale.

At the end of September, "Breaking Bad" reached its series record of 10.3 million viewers, including 6.7 million adults from 18 to 49

The zombies still have more life in them than anything else out there in TV.
