Seven volunteers were abducted in Syria on Sunday afternoon by a gunman who reportedly opened fire on the team as they were in transit in north-west Syria. Six of the seven that were taken belonged to the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) and the seventh worked as a Red Crescent volunteer.

According to the BBC, an ICRC spokesperson said that the aid agency is not in communication with the gunman currently. Rima Kamal, ICRC spokesperson, said, "We call for the immediate release of the seven colleagues abducted this morning…who work tirelessly to provide assistance to those most in need in Syria. Incidents such as this one unfortunately will undermine our capacity to assist those who need our help."

USA Today reported that ICRC spokesperson, Simon Schorno, said that the seven who were abducted had been in the field since Oct. 10 "to assess the medical situation in the area and to look at how to provide medical aid." The nationalities of the workers have not yet been released and the identity of the gunman is unknown at this time.
