You know what they say, you can take the girl out of Mystic Falls, but you can't take murder and havoc out of Mystic Falls. Okay, maybe that's not the real saying but it sure seemed relevant for tonight's season 5 premiere of The CW hit, "The Vampire Diaries."

Going into tonight's episode, we were warned "The Vampire Diaries" would be making some changes. We got rid of that pesky Original family, brought in some mysterious people, and put our favorite two vampires into a new setting, college! But worry not. Even with all these new additions, somehow tonight felt like the old 'TVD' was back and better than ever!

So let's dig into "I Know What You Did Last Summer."

Summer of Fun

We open with a classic summer montage of the Mystic Falls gang. Elena and Damon are in full-force honeymoon phase. Caroline is prepping for college while Tyler is away with a werewolf pack in Tennessee. Jeremy is still talking to dead people, aka Bonnie and answering her messages so no one suspects something's up. And then there is Matt. He spent his summer backpacking through Europe with Rebekah which apparently included having a threesome in Prague. Say what?!

Our montage rounds out by bringing us back to the present, while taking a bubble bath with Damon walking around in a towel (writers, we thank you for that), Elena has a bad feeling that she should check on Stefan. Oh I don't know Elena… Maybe you should check on the man you left heartbroken three months ago! Duh. This transitions into poor Stefan drowning in a locked safe underwater over and over again. I. Can't. Watch.

Schools Back in Session

Before she heads off to college, Elena coaches Jeremy on how to explain he is miraculously alive to his classmates. The plan is simple. Jeremy wanted attention, used drugs, burned his house down, and faked his own death. Obviously. Elena asks Damon to keep an eye out for Jeremy while she's away and Damon tells her not too worry. Yeah right! Jeremy gets into a fight on the first day of school resulting in, of course, expulsion. So Damon must compel the principal for a more reasonable punishment and decides Elena doesn't need to know.

The Roommate

Once at Whitmore College, Elena and Caroline's home for the next four years, the girls are getting setting in their dorm rooms while ghost Bonnie creepily watches. Before Caroline's mom, Sheriff Forbes leaves, she tells Elena Whitmore is where her father fell in love with medicine (hint hint). Right as Caroline and Elena are toasting to their new lives as college vampires there is a knock at the door. It's their new roommate Megan. Dun dun dun.

Since the girls are apparently above the idea of a random college roommie, Caroline suggests they compel Megan and make her leave but Elena wants to try and be normal. But per "TVD" usual, Megan is no innocent college freshman. This girl has vervaine laced water chillin' in the mini-fridge. Bet Elena wishes they had compelled her when they had the chance. Oh wait, it continues to get weirder. Not only is Megan murdered by a vampire at a frat party, she has a picture with Elena's dead dad on her cell phone! Ah… what was Daddy Gilbert up to?

But the good news is it looks like Damon and Elena's relationship can stand the distance with all the kissing and constant "I love you's." Sadly, Caroline cries herself to sleep after a getting a heartbreaking message from Tyler. Aw!

Stefan is MIA, While Silas is Not

Right off the bat, Stefan's Shadow Self cleared up a few things for us. First, he is not a vampire and hates being called one. Second, he can control everyone's minds at once with his powers.Third, he doesn't care who knows his true identity. And fourth, he wants Katherine. And just to give us a preview of the terror he is capable of, Sila not only slit Sheriff Forbes' wrists because he was thirsty, but he murders Bonnie's father, the Mystic Falls mayor, at the summer block party. I swear Mystic Falls needs to stop having town gatherings.

Meanwhile, Stefan is locked up underwater, having visions of Elena and trying to save his humanity. At least now Damon and everyone knows Stefan is actually missing so they can find him ASAP!

Human Again

While everyone else had a pleasant summer, Miss Katherine Pierce has had just the opposite! She has chipped nails, messy hair, and blisters from running in heels. Queue my favorite line of the episode, "Do you have any idea what it's like to run in heels?" But blisters or no blisters, Katherine will run to protect herself and once she finds out Silas wants her, she runs away and almost kills Jeremy in the process! Now Silas has all of Mystic Falls looking for her. Good luck with that Kat!

Be Careful Who You Sleep With

Just when it looked like things were going well for Matt, they took a turn for the worse. When he spots Nadia, the Russian beauty he and Rebekah had their threesome with, he questions what she is doing in Mystic Falls. She tells him she stole his Gilbert ring and wanted to give it back. How nice of her right? No. She then precedes to have her friend take Matt out! Who is this mysterious woman and why is she hurting Mystic Falls' golden boy?

I don't know about you guys but that was one heck of a season opener. Tune in next week to see how Damon and Elena can save my beloved Stefan from his underwater prison!
