U.S. Cuts Military Aid To Egypt
Three months after having ordered a review of United States aid to Egypt in response to a military take over, the government settled on a middle-of-the-road response by halting the delivery of military hardware, but maintaining crucial security assistance and counter-terrorism efforts.
Our economic support of Egypt is longstanding; between 1948 and 2011, the U.S. has sent Egypt $71.6 billion dollars in military and economic aid.
While trying not to totally alienate the Arab ally, the U.S. wanted to send a clear message that we are concered about the country’s connection with the Muslim Brotherhood.
"As a result of the review directed by President Obama, we have decided to maintain our relationship with the Egyptian government, while recalibrating our assistance to Egypt to best advance our interests," said State Department spokeswoman Jen Psaki in a recent statement.
