Bane is ditching his famous mask for rose-colored glasses. Tom Hardy, the British actor known for playing the masked villain in "The Dark Knight Rises" and "Inception," has signed on to play Elton John.

The singer's production company Rocket Pictures’ is releasing the movie in the U.S. by Focus Features. The movie will narrate the British pop star’s life, from his childhood to his rise to fame.

Producer Steve Hamilton Shaw had this to say about Hardy’s role in the movie: “Tom is a stellar talent who will add extraordinary depth and nuance in bringing Elton’s story to life, we are excited to have such a gifted actor on board.”

John is serving as executive producer for the film and will be re-recording some of his greatest hits to match the emotional moments in the film, which will be directed by Michael Gracey, who is behind the upcoming movie "The Greatest Showman on Earth" starring famed Australian actor Hugh Jackman.

Peter Schessel, who is CEO of Focus Features, said that his company is “confident that Tom will embody the physicality and spirit of Sir Elton.

This, in conjunction with the creative team led by Michael and Rocket Pictures, will provide the foundation for something that will be a unique cinematic event. Tom is quickly becoming known as one of the world's most versatile actors, and like others at the top of their craft, he has proven his ability to transform himself completely into the character or subject found in the material.”

With an original screenplay penned by Academy Award nominee Lee Hall, famous for his work on "War Horse" and "Billy Elliot," "Rocketman" is set to start shooting in fall 2014.
