At a press conference held in Geneva on Wednesday, Moscow expressed support for Iran to have sanctions removed once Tehran agrees to have international supervision over their nuclear collection. Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov believes that with Iran working on a new plan to end the nuclear standoff the removal would be "concrete and logical."

Once meetings with other global powers (the U.S., China, Russia, France and Britain) concluded, he stated:

"If such an understanding is reached, i.e. if all the rights of Iran as a signatory to the NPT [Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons] are recognized in exchange for the introduction of control, then all sanctions - unilateral and multilateral - must be lifted in full."

Even though talks were productive on Tuesday and Wednesday, the Washington Post reported that Iran and the U.S. rejected the proposal before details were released to the public. According to U.S. Sen. Marco Rubio (Fl.), the U.S. opposed granting Iran any relief from sanctions, suggesting that Iran's economic penalties should be made even tougher. Iran denied that Tehran would submit to more stringent international inspections of its nuclear facilities.

White House officials responded that unless Iran commits to significant constraints that will ensure that it can never use its nuclear facilities to make atomic weapons, no deal will be made.

The eight countries will reunite in December to further discuss this topic.
