Violence broke out on Sunday as Egypt celebrated the 40th anniversary of its military campaign against the Israeli forces in the Sinai Peninsula.

Supporters of the Egyptian military celebrated today's anniversary in Cairo's Tahrir Square, while protestors- those who support the ousted Islamist President Mohamed Morsi's former government- marched into the square to protest under an "anti-coup" banner. Clashes soon broke out between the two when authorities backed by armed civilians, according to The New York Times, took on the protestors.

Sources have claimed that at least 50 people have died in the protest, making it the highest casualties Egypt has faced since the army ousted former President Morsi in July.

Rather than celebrating the anniversary in unity, current political instability in Egypt has forced the celebration to become another point of violent dispute among those who support the Egyptian military and those who back the former Morsi government.
