Obama, Boehner Trade Ultimatums
In a Tuesday morning news conference following a House Republican conference meeting on Capitol Hill, Boehner reiterated his party's position regarding the Affordable Care Act and the debt ceiling. He also accused the Democrats of refusing to negotiate.
"The central argument is this," Boehner told reporters on Tuesday. "Are we going to sit down and have a conversation, or aren't we? There's no boundaries here. There's nothing on the table, nothing off the table."
Senate Majority leader Harry Reid (D-Nevada) said Boehner and the Republicans executed a "classic bait-and-switch operation" over the shutdown.
President Obama also spoke to the House speaker over the phone on Tuesday, reiterating his own position on the negotiations.
The White House said that the President is "willing to negotiate with Republicans - after the threat of goverment shutdown and default have been removed - over policies that Republicans think would strengthen the country."
Obama again urged Boehner during Tuesday's call to hold votes on several pieces of legislation to fund the government and raise the debt ceiling. Boehner has said that those bills lack the necessary votes to pass, but Obama and the Democrats disagree.
