It’s that time of year when you can be whoever or whatever you want. Halloween is a time of self-expression and creativity! Or maybe it's just dictated by popular culture at the time… A look into the trendiest and most popular costumes of the past ten years settles the matter, and the results are not surprising. Business Insider and Spirit Halloween offer a glimpse into the last decade of Halloween, and tell us what costumes sold the most. 

Halloween Costume Timeline 

2003 After Johnny Depp’s first appearance as Captain Jack Sparrow, pirates were the most popular costume. 

2004 Following the release of the movie based on the “SpongeBob SquarePants” series, the yellow sea sponge was all the rage. 

2005 Star Wars costumes filled the streets this Halloween after the final movie premiered in theatres. 

2006 This year was a tough decision between Barack Obama and Guy Fawkes from “V for Vendetta.”

2007 Spiderman was once again popular this year, but it had some competition from Hannah Montana impersonators. 

2008 The Joker was the most iconic costume of the year. 

2009 “Twilight” mania swept the nation this year, resulting in vampire costumes selling out. 

2010 Lady Gaga’s crazy outfits were the norm on Halloween this year. 

2011 Snooki and her castmates on MTV’s trashy reality show, “Jersey Shore” were the most popular choice this year. 

2012 Avenger themed costumes competed with Korean pop star Psy, after he released “Gangnam Style.”

2013 No one should be surprised to know that the costume that has sold the most this year Miley Cyrus’ outfit from this years VMA’s, the “twerking teddy.”
