Congressman Kenny Marchant is a conservative Republican representing the 24th District in Texas. He assumed the position in 2005, coming from a 17 year stint as State Representative for Texas Legislature, according to his website. He has long opposed the implementation of Obamacare, calling it “unsound policy and disastrous for our nation’s fiscal solvency,” according to the Fort Worth Star-Telegram.

Marchant’s disagreement with the policy falls in line with his other conservative views. Marchant, 61, is an ardent supporter of lower taxes, free markets, enforcing immigration laws, and limiting the size and scope of the government. See his voting history here. He is an active advocate of the Second Amendment and is a longtime member of the National Rifle Association. He serves on the House Committee on Ways & Means and the Committee on Education and the Workforce. Marchant is also a member of the Immigration Reform Caucus, the House Tea Party Caucus, the 10th Amendment Task Force, the Congressional Pro-Life Caucus, and the Republican Study Committee.

Marchant has been outspoken in his opposition of Obamacare along every step of the political process. When the Supreme Court held up the constitutionality of the policy in June, 2012, he released a statement saying, “Today’s decision doesn’t change the fact that millions of small businesses are going to be deluged and job-killing regulations imposed by Obamacare. It also doesn’t change the fact that Obamacare is bad public policy that imposed new taxes on all Americans. The American people support repeal and I will work to repeal Obamacare in its entirety.” And work, he did. This past April, Marchant released a letter he penned to Department of Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius about his disagreement with the new proposed terms that would hire thousands of new “navigators,” or people assisting consumers in their access to Obamacare.

Marchant, declared “the most frugal member of the north Texas congressional delegation,” by the Fort Worth Star-Telegram, and “a rock-solid conservative” by fellow Congressman Paul Ryan, has been actively expressing his opinion on the Obamacare defunding and government shut down at hand through his Twitter account.

The 24th District of Texas, which Marchant represents, is composed of the cities of Addison, Bedford, Carrollton (of which he was Mayor from 1984-1987), Colleyville, Coppell, Euless, Farmer’s Branch, Grapevine, Hurst, Irving, Plano, Southlake, and most notably, Dallas.

Sharon Logan, Community Information Officer for Coppell, said that the city is not feeling any direct effects at the time due to being funded “primarily by property and sales tax collected at a local level.” Tom Bryson, Director of Communications for Farmers Branch echoed her sentiments, confirming that the city "is not adversely affected."

Similarly, Bruce Glasscock, City Manager of Plano reported that things were “business as usual,” though added, “If I ran the city of Plano the way the Federal Government is being run, I’d be out of a job.”
