Designers are still pumping out sky-high heels and pointed-toe flats, but shoes at the complete opposite end of the spectrum are becoming a new trend in fashion: the boyfriend shoes.

The boyfriend shoe is characterized by a low to almost non-existent heel, round toes and stiff detailing. These shoes can range from ankle boots and combat boots, to tods-look-alikes and oxford style shoes.

We've all seen trendsters wear Oxfords or Dr. Martens, and I don't know about you, but I always ogle those women who are able to pull them off. Well now's my time, as well as yours. I'm not saying to go ahead and pull your boyfriend's shoes out of his closet. Because this trend is so popular, you are guaranteed to find these shoes in almost every shoe store out there. Whether it's Steve Madden, Aldo, Urban Outfitters or even Nordstorm, you are bound to find a pair you love.

So, how to wear boyfriend shoes? The simple answer is anything. Mixing them with a dress blurs the lines between gender roles (see my Blurred Lines column). Wearing them with skinny cut-offs has been sported on Taylor Swift and Miranda Kerr. Like many of the trends I like to feature, this trend is very versatile and easy to combine with almost every outfit.

When and where you can wear boyfriend shoes all depends on the fabric and color. You're probably not going to wear gold sequined oxfords in a professional setting, and you are probably not going to wear white canvas boyfriend shoes to a club. Brown and black boyfriend shoes are good colors for your first pair, especially if you are a practical buyer and like to have items that you can use all the time.

Below is a slideshow of cute pairs of boyfriend shoes, and pictures of some of your favorite celebrities wearing this trend. Enjoy!
