Bill Sharman, a USC almunus who went on to become an All-Star guard for the Boston Celtics and to coach the Los Angeles Lakers to their first NBA championship in 1972, died this morning from complications due to a stroke he suffered last week.

Sharman is one of just three men to have been elected to the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame as both a player and a coach. In 1996, he was selected as one of the 50 greatest players of the NBA's first 50 years.

Sharman died at his home in Redondo Beach, California. He was 87.
