In the latest attempt to create stories where none exist, The Washington Examiner reported Sunday that "the Amber alert support system, the national missing child warning program, has been offline because of the government shutdown."

This revelation caught the attention of media organizations happy to spew controversial information as well as that of Americans looking for anything to get them annoyed. It would be a fine story if it were true, but it's not.

The Amber Alert website was taken down because furloughed employees could not maintain the site while out of the office, but the system remained in place. Local police and governments issue the alerts, including road sign alerts, texts and tweets.

That's why Miami police could issue and later cancel an Amber Alert on October 5th. And why Galveston County officials could issue a similar alert, also on October 5th.

But while the Amber Alert system remains uninterrupted, a Department of Justice spokesperson has announced that the "informational site maintained by the Justice Department has been restored."

To do so, the Justice Department had to bring in at least one furloughed employee, and it remains unclear if the Justice Department will have the funds to continue to monitor the restored site.

So ignorance has successfully defeated the purpose of the shutdown by bringing back furloughed employees to complete nonessential tasks, and has also put the nonessential Amber Alert website at a security risk with no one to monitor it. Great.
