This morning, singer Katy Perry tweeted "happy birthday cutie!!!" to her boyfriend John Mayer -- a sentiment we at Neon Tommy share. It's the soulful singer's 36th birthday but he's far from aging in our books.

In honor of Mayer's big day, we look back at the reasons to celebrate this talented artist:

1) He says bizarre things. Most famously, Mayer openly told Rolling Stone in an interview that his sex life with Jessica Simpson was "like napalm, sexual napalm." Mayer often not only talks about his relationships, but also outlandish statements about himself. Case in point: "Sometimes I wish that I was the weather, you'd bring me up in conversation forever. And when it rained, I'd be the talk of the day."

2) He's not afraid to show his personal style, telling GQ that he's "never done anything because [he] thought it would look cool. It's always been a pursuit based on curiosity." Mayer's been known to wear the Japanese brand Visvim lately, which highlights Native American style and completes his hippie persona. He's also got an impressive watch collection, from his Rolex to a limited edition Tiffany-faced Patek Philippe.

3) He's proved himself as a songwriter. From "Your Body is a Wonderland" to "Daughters," his songs have both enjoyed commercial and critical success.

4) He's funny. Mayer has been featured in various videos on Funny or Die. In this video, he's parodying himself and the songwriting process, along with comedic stars Judd Apatow and Kristen Bell. "If I wasn't thought of a young Bruce Springsteen before, I sure am now," Mayer jokes.

5) He gives back to charity. Mayer teamed up this summer with the Northern California Institute for Research and Education, which helps soldiers who suffer from post traumatic stress disorder. A dollar from each ticket of his summer tour went to the cause.
