2013 had a good run with biopics hitting the big screen. Movies trailers featuring well-known celebrity casts can look promising, however we are often disappointed with the result. See what biopic of the year made your movie list—to be seen, or to be seen again.

All is by My Side, released Sept. 7, takes audiences on the Jimi Hendrix experience, focusing on his life before fame. It premiered at the 2013 Toronto International Film Festival.

Captain Phillips, starring Tom Hanks, can be seen Oct. 11 on the big screen. Hanks plays Captain Richard Phillips, portraying the 2009 hijacking of an American ship by Somali pirates. The film recently received harsh criticism on CNN, which accussed the film of portraying the true story incorrectly. The biopic tells audiences about the first American ship to be hijacked in 200 years, a marking of history.

Allan Rickman is well-known for playing Snape in the “Harry Potter” series. In "CBGB", Allan Rickman stars as club owner Hilly Kristal. “Harry Potter” actor Rupert Grin also stars in the film. Releasing on Oct. 11, the film takes rock ‘n roll fans behind the scene of the club’s success, with a focus on famed artists such as Blondie, The Police and Talking Heads.

In the biopic "Jobs", Ashton Kutcher, starring as Steve Jobs, showed fans that he has the skills to play a serious character. The movie covers the chronology of Jobs’ life from college dropout to a successful entrepreneur and creator of the i-pod. The drama hit theaters on August 16th.

"Kill Your Darlings" tells the story of poets William Burroughs, Allen Ginsberg and Jack Kerouac. Without giving away too much, the genre is a biopic drama, taking you through the journey of the writers after the murder of teacher David Kammerer. The film is a great way to see well-missed actors like Daniel Radcliffe, (another “Harry Potter” star), and “Dexter” star Michael C. Hall. On his show, John Stewart teased Hall about playing another killer just before the series finale of “Dexter.” The movie opens on October 16th.

"Lovelace" is a mixture of comedy and drama, with Amanda Seyfried portraying porn star Linda Lovelace. The film tells of Lovelace's story of abuse and mistreatment by the industry. The biopic was shown at the Sundance Film Festival and was out for a limited release on August 9th.

"Rush", directed by Ron Howard, tells the true story of rival racecar drivers James Hunt and Niki Lauda. Lauda is sent to the hospital after a crash, but is determined to beat Hunt despite his injuries. See Australian hunk Chris Hemsworth play Hunt, and Daniel Brühl play Lauda.
