Ted Cruz 'Filibusters' Against Obamacare
Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) has taken the Senate floor today in opposition of President Obama's healthcare law. Sen. Cruz stated earlier this week that he would prepare to take the floor Tuesday afternoon to speak "until [he is] no longer able to stand."
Cruz's contentions against Obamacare are expected to hault all other orders of business for the Senate. Cruz is said to be immitating Sen. Rand Paul's (R-Ky.) 13-hour filibuster against the Obama administration's drone policy. Sen. Cruz's speech today, however, is not a filibuster, because voting will take place on Wednesday. The LA Times reports:
"...Cruz is just aiming to hold the floor himself until the Senate votes Wednesday on the first of two procedural motions.
The difference led Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) to bluntly say there is no filibuster.
'Filibusters are to stop people from voting. We are going to vote tomorrow,' Reid said Tuesday morning. 'No one can stop that.'"
