Sweet Rose Creamery Opens Second L.A. Store

Its wide-ranging dessert menu includes milkshakes, malts, sundaes, ice cream pies and guittard chocolate-dipped bananas. Sadly, having it all isn’t always the recipe for success.
The ice creamery opened its new Pico Boulevard location on Sept. 21. This second location boasts locally brewed Caffe Luxxe Coffee and morning pastries from Milo and Olive, alongside a 1,000-sq. ft. freezer that holds homemade ice cream (made on-site).
Although the experience at Sweet Rose Creamery is sure to be decadent and delicious, it will also be ridiculously overpriced.
Let’s focus on the delicious for now. Sweet Rose Creamery features sundaes like the "Fudge Brownie Sundae" and "Banana Split." The "Fudge Brownie Sundae," which includes two scoops of Maggie’s Mint ice cream with valrhona chocolate pearls, brownie bites, crispy almonds, hot fudge sauce, fresh whipped topping and drizzled chocolate sauce, is as mouthwatering as it sounds (and looks). Some Sweet Rose Creamery employees mentioned that Maggie’s Mint is one of their most popular flavors, which is no surprise. The mint flavor was so genuine. The ice cream had such a pure, fresh quality; however, the valrhona chocolate pearls added a little crunch that did not complement the mint well. They weren’t rich enough and distracted from the overall taste.
Now, on to the basic ice cream scoop. Sweet Rose Creamery features an assortment of monthly rotating menu flavors. The salted caramel ice cream, which is the other most popular flavor according to Sweet Rose Creamery employees, was harsh and not nearly sweet enough. The cookies & cream ice cream, sampled with pecan brittle and chocolate sauce, was good, but nothing special. The pecan brittle, however, was a perfect topping, and it surprisingly complemented the ice cream very well.
While both the "Fudge Brownie Sundae" ($7.50) and the cookies & cream single scoop ($6) were tasty, neither of them was worth the price. Who wants dessert to blow their budget when it could blow your mind? On top of the price, the atmosphere of Sweet Rose Creamery wasn’t stellar. There was nowhere to sit inside … just a small bar to lean against, which was really just a holding place for napkins, sugar and cream.
This artisan ice cream shop really isn’t worth the trip, which is disappointing considering all the hype of second location's debut. Save some money and hit up Cold Stone the next time your sweet tooth strikes.
