In preparation for Apple's next iPhone reveal on September 10th, Korean tech giant Samsung revealed the Galaxy Gear Smart Watch and Note III at IFA 2013 in Berlin on Wednesday, hoping to usher in the next wave of "smart" technology.

The Galaxy Gear is intended to allow users to remain hands-free on the go, without the constant need to check your phone. The smartwatch, which will run on Google's Android operating system and features Wi-Fi capability, allows users to write emails, check the weather, answer calls, and set alarms orally through S Voice. For e-mails or texts too long to simply complete on the Gear, there is a feature called Smart Relay, where you can connect your watch to your phone and display whatever is being shown on your watch onto your Samsung phone.

The new technology also reveals Samsung's eagerness to target another key demographic: health and fitness enthusiasts. The Galaxy Gear can connect to your smartphone, using a 4-megapixel camera to track heart rate, diet details, and number of steps taken. Pictures can be taken by pointing your wrist and "shooting," which hopefully will look something like this.

The Galaxy Gear possesses a 1.63-inch super AMOLED display, as well as 4 GB of internal storage and a 800 MHz processor, and will be available in 140 countries on September 25th, but won't be released in the U.S. and Japan until October. It will cost $299, and will be available in six different colors. More than 70 apps will be available for the Gear at launch.

Samsung co-CEO J.K. Shin referred to the Gear as a "perfect complement" to the new Galaxy Note III, which brings improved specs along with an even bigger screen than its predecessors.

The screen measures 5.7 inches, compared to the 5.5-inch display for the Note II. According to CNET, it features a 2.3 GHz processor, 3 GB of RAM, a 3,200 mAh battery, and a 13-megapixel camera. It comes with a leather texture and fake stitching, giving it the appearance of a wallet rather than a smartphone.

The biggest enhancement to the Note III comes with the improved multitasking. Multi Window allows you to split the screen in half, with an app in each half, while Air Command allows you to bring up a quick app, use the improved S Pen to draw it on the screen, and use one app without affecting what you were previously doing. You can then close the quick app, or minimize it in case you need it later.

Samsung is looking to keep pushing technology forward, increasing the power and size of smartphones, as well as helping bring out the age of smartwatches. With rumors that Apple is working on an iWatch, it was important for Samsung to get their product out quickly. Time will tell exactly how well the smartwatch works, but it will inevitably lead to a plethora of similar products in the near future, as other companies try and capitalize on this possible market.
