Following the arrival of an U.S. destroyer ship late last week, Russia sent a reconnaissance ship to the Syrian Coast Sunday in order to monitor the developing situation.

The U.S. has been preparing for a possible air strike against Bashar al-Assad regime over their alleged use of chemical weapons that killed over 1,400 people near Damascus a few weeks ago. Russia, on the other hand, accused rebel forces of using chemical weapons and framing it on the Assad regime, in order to invoke international intervention.

Despite appearances the foreign minister, Sergei Lavrov, assured that Russia was “not planning to go to go to war with anyone over Syria.”

But Lavrov did question the United States’ military purpose as well as the validity of the Geneva II peace conference if the U.S. were to strike.

From The Guardian

“On Monday, Lavrov said a US strike would put the proposed Geneva II peace conference in serious doubt, Itar-Tass reported.

"If the action announced by the president of the United States unfortunately occurs, it will put off prospects for the forum for a long time, if not forever," Lavrov said.

Also on Monday, Lavrov said Russia remained unconvinced of US allegations that the Assad regime was behind the chemical attack after a meeting between the American ambassador to Russia, Michael McFaul, and a senior Russian diplomat. The material presented by the United States contained no facts and "absolutely does not convince us", Lavrov said.”
