Pakistan Earthquake Kills 45, Creates New Island
The United States Geological Survey said the 7.7. magnitude earthquake struck around 4:30 p.m., local time, in Baluchistan, Pakistan's earthquake-prone province that borders Iran.
Tremors were felt as far away as India's capital New Delhi. People fled out onto the street of Quetta, the provincial capital. Several mud houses were destroyed by aftershocks in surrounding areas like Awaran 41mi (66km) NorthEast of Baluchistan, according to officials.
They fear the number of causalities will rise, with people trapped in the rubble.
The earthquake was powerful enough to cause the seabed to rise, creating a small, mountain like island off the coast of Gwadar. According to GEO TV, the island is about 100 feet in diameter and about one mile off the coast.
Helicopters were dispatched to the disaster area with emergency supplies. Over 1,000 troops, rescue and medical teams will be sent to provide aid, Maj. Gen. Asim Bajwa said.
