Navy Yard Shooting Suspect Had Military Contract

Authorities have identified a gunman (possibly only one of three) responsible for Monday's shooting rampage at the Navy Yard in Washington D.C.

Thirty four-year-old Aaron Alexis was named by NBC Washington as the now deceased shooter who was able to gain entry to the area near the stadium of Major League Baseball's Washington Nationals. Alexis was a civiliian contractor from Fort Worth, Texas.

Alexis reportedly walked into building 197, one of the three buildings located on the Navy Yard campus, and opened fire.

According to Pete Williams of NBC News, the FBI believes he entered by using the credentials of a man who used to work at Navy Yard.

Alexis was identified by his fingerprints and was just hired as a civilian contractor before the shooting. He was charged with discharging a fireman in 2010, According to police records.

President Barack Obama commented on the incident, calling it a "cowardly act."

The Senate is now on recess until Tuesday because of the shooting.

D.C. Mayor Vincent C. Gray said no motive is known.

Navy Yard workers have now been allowed to leave Yard's campus and are relocating with families at the nearby National's stadium.

Law enforcement authorities have confirmed that one gunman is dead at the scene. Police are still searching for two other suspects, who maybe have potentially been involved in the mass shooting.

After a few conflicting death reports, D.C. Police Chief Kathy Lenier confirmed that at least twelve people have now been confirmed dead. There is no evidence that the incident was a terrorist attack.

Police are searching for one white male and one black male. The white male reportedly was wearing khaki military-style clothing and a beret. The African-American shooter was wearing olive military-style clothing. Both are believed to be between 40 and 50-years-old and were last seen at about 8:35 a.m. EST.

The shooting took place around 8:20 a.m. Monday morning. By 10:30 a.m., one shooter was said to have been killed, according to D.C. police chief Cathy Lanier. She said that the suspects were seen to be carrying guns and dressed in military uniforms, although they are not believed to be members of armed services.

Multiple buildings and schools are under lockdown and security has been increased at Capitol Hill and the Pentagon.
At this point, the only thing confirmed by authorities has been the death of one suspected gunman and multiple other fatalities at the naval building where about 3,000 people work. The police chief stressed that police do not know for certain that there was more than one gunman.
