Miss World 2013 Crowned Despite Political Fury

The Miss World pageant concluded its competition on Saturday night, crowning 23-year old Miss Philippines Megan Young as the winner of the 63rd annual beauty contest.

But this year's pageant came with a flurry of political concerns.
After threats from an Islamic organization that protested the event to be going against the teachings of Islam, Miss World organizers were forced to consider moving its final competition site from the capital Jakarta to a more tourist-oriented, Hindu-dominated resort island of Bali.
The Islamic Defenders Front, otherwise known as the FPI, organized protests upon the decision that Indonesia was to host the even this year, criticizing that a pageant promoting bikinis and skin-revealing clothing degraded women and their religions. Pageant organizers decided to cut bikinis from the competition, as more conservative sarongs were utilized in replacement.
The internationally-popular event has also faced oppositions in the past. In 2002, the competition originally planned to be held in Nigeria was forced to move to London, after riots by Muslims resulted in more than 100 dead and 500 injured.
Despite the criticisms of the FPI, Indonesia as a whole does not appear to be completely anti-beauty pageant. Jakarta has just recently hosted third annual World Muslimah contest as an Islamic alternative to the western-oriented beauty pageants.
Yet with this year's pagent concluded, it looks like those involved in the planning of this international event can now have a breath of relief.
